For some time City Mission had seen the need to expand its operations to a new area in the city to cater for women and children. In 2001 the Mission purchased a rundown 2-storey building at Ela Beach. Extensive refurbishments were completed and the building opened its doors 28th April 2003.

In addition to running an extremely busy Refuge & Child Abuse Centre, which is situated on the ground floor, the Mission is providing a single Women’s Hostel for working ladies on the second floor of the building. Welfare officers, security guards, a matron, cooks, cleaners & administration staff have been employed to ensure the best possible service to the community and tenants is available.

The building was name “Haus Ruth” to cherish the memory of Ruth Mary George. Ruth was the wife of Larry George. Ruth and Larry started the Mission in 1993, but Ruth passed away with cancer in November 1995. Ruth had devoted 30 years to the education and help of countless Papua New Guineans.
